Dr. Alexander Wiese is a patent litigator focusing on high-stakes, technology-driven disputes. He is known for combining procedural precision with strategic cross-border coordination.
Since his admission to the bar, Dr. Wiese has represented international and domestic clients in complex, multi-jurisdictional patent litigation. He regularly acts in proceedings involving mechanical engineering, medical devices, semiconductor and chip technology, telecommunications and information technology.
A core focus of his practice is litigation concerning standard-essential patents (SEPs), particularly in the fields of mobile communications and video coding. He has successfully led several major SEP disputes and coordinated cross-border proceedings and defense strategies, including parallel proceedings before the UK High Court and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), requiring close strategic alignment across jurisdictions and careful handling of FRAND-related issues.
Dr. Wiese is a registered representative before the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and has extensive experience in UPC litigation. He has acted in proceedings before various local divisions, including Munich, Düsseldorf, Milan and Lisbon. As Lead Counsel before the Court of Appeal of the UPC, he obtained a landmark decision on the protection of confidential information, contributing to the development of early UPC case law.
In Germany, Dr. Wiese represents both claimants and defendants in infringement proceedings and works closely with patent attorneys in nullity actions before the Federal Patent Court and in parallel revocation proceedings in other jurisdictions.
He is repeatedly recognized as a “Recommended Individual” by Juve Patent for patent litigation in Germany and before the UPC.
Beyond his casework, Dr. Wiese regularly speaks at international conferences and publishes on patent litigation and UPC-related topics. He is also a speaker in the European Patent Litigation Certificate program of the ERA Academy of European Law, where he lectures on UPC procedure and practice.
